GST input credit on business travel

Also called: input tax credit · ITC on travel · GST on air tickets

GST input credit on business travel is tax paid on qualifying travel purchases that a company can set against its own GST liability. Eligibility depends on what was bought and on the invoice carrying the company’s GSTIN correctly. A ticket invoiced to an employee personally generally cannot be claimed at all.

In practice

  • The company’s GSTIN has to be captured when the booking is made, not added afterwards
  • The invoice must be issued to the company rather than to the traveller
  • Air travel, hotel stays and ground transport are each treated differently
  • A hotel invoice raised in another state introduces a place-of-supply question
  • Credits reconcile against the supplier’s own filings, so a mismatch blocks the claim

Why it matters

Unclaimed input credit is a real cost that never appears as a line item — it surfaces only as travel costing more than budget, with nothing to point at. Booking is the cheapest moment to get GSTIN capture right; once the invoice is issued it usually cannot be corrected. Treat this as the shape of the problem and confirm the specifics with your tax advisers.
